A collaborative documentary + Troost Festival Campaign material

This poster asks the audience (anyone who resides on Troost, Nearby Troost, Outside of troost, it doesn't matter) to write their name if they're interested in the annual Troost Festival.

Instructions at the bottom tell the viewer that once this circle is full of names overlapping etc. They will be scanned in and used for T-shirt designs making the Troost Fest T-shirts a collaborative effort while also giving a reason to go to the event (to see their shirt).

Also this is supposed to represent their visual identity tagline

Your Troost News Paper

I decided that as a graphic designer, to create a visual and interactive platform for my audience to document themselves and to collaborate in this new identity process.

This is a fill in news paper with questions asking the user to draw themselves, their neighbor, and to write about themselves. The paper also encourages them to tell any story that is representative of what they would like to see in their local newspaper.

Troost Folks meeting Notes

The following are snippets from conversations that took place on February 11th in the lobby of St.Mary’s Egyptian Orthodox Church. This community group who refer to themselves as the “Troost Folks”, currently work towards strengthening the Troost community.

I used all the images of signage that I gathered, and began to sample them into small color boxes. I then took those boxes (copy pasted) and organized them onto a grid.

I was able to see through this chart that the most frequent colors are

Warm Reds
Warm yellows

& An accent of Teal

I spoke with Rev. David and Several other members of Troost Folks (some who are also members in the American Indian Society, KFFI, Center for Global Community, and more) and they agreed that these colors are most seen on Troost. Red and Yellow have also been used in past collateral for their events.

Teal is a color used frequently in Osage native american culture who also originate from the Troost corridor.

Walking north on Troost Avenue from Emmanuel CleaverII to 31st Street, I found many interesting graphic signs. The majority of them (that stood out to me anyway) had a worn and warm character to them. The following images and color samples are a collection of aesthetics and colors that will influence the visual identity design for the Troost neighborhood and community.

Thesis

This project is a collaboration between neighbors working together to create a visual symbol/system for their community to take pride in. Their goal is to erase the stigma the neighborhood has in the eyes of their residents and the rest of the Kansas City Metropolitan and also begin a new “experimental community”.

We are exploring how graphic design can facilitate an experimental and collaborative movement. How can graphic design play as a platform for empowering individuals and strengthening the bonds between all neighbors?

"dividing line"

One thing that most definitely upset me about the meeting with the KU/Eldorado studio meeting was their misleading presentation of the history of the dividing line or Troost.

In their board presentations they define Troost Avenue as the "dividing line" between blacks and whites in Kansas City.

dividing line = troost = dividing line = troost ...

making the words synonymous with each other.

The dividing line throughout Kansas City has always been there, and although back in the day, blacks and whites may have lived in the same neighborhood, they were still separated in living with separate drinking fountains and assigned sectioned seating in public transportation.

Nowadays the east side of Troost according to research, is primarily a black population.

Saying that the history of the dividing line was more successful or "vibrant" back then is inaccurate. They say "no we're talking about troost" is misleading because now they're just talking about the asphalt named "Troost" but according to the history of the "dividing line" which they define as synonymous with troost, or a troost.

In that case "the troost" used to be elsewhere, it may not have been on the asphalt named troost that we know today, but it was a line that existed in the segregated living restrictions, and also in the lines drawn back in the day that limited the black population from living in certain houses, areas etc. If anything, the line isn't at all what it used to be and has gotten better but as we know it is still somewhat there nonetheless.

Also the idea to me that I must go out and find black people to work with in collaboration of this project is like forcing a black and white person to get married for the sake of diversity.

I'm not saying that I don't want to work with black people or African Americans or anyone of African ancestry, it just simply forces me to look at color when I wasn't really before.

I was just trying to work with residents of Troost and their community.

Who cares what color?!?

I think that the entire architectural project is based on trying to get white and black people to live in the same area immediately make people conscious of the color of their skin and is not a gesture that will be warmly welcomed. It's a rather awkward gesture.

They don't mind multiculturalism at all, but they don't constantly think "who can we get over here that will make us look more diverse?" they just think about celebrating neighbors.

It's as if I were to thank Genia for being Russian and in my life because she brings diversity to my experiences... that's just flat out exoticism. I'm not innocent of this, not many people are, people exoticise people all the time, but it doesn't make it correct. A community shouldn't be built with exoticism mixed in with the foundation, it should be purely on revitalizing the neighborhood, making a community more racially diverse doesn't mean it will be safer or economically better off.

It made me wonder and worry about how I got my job and would hope that I was hired based on my work ethic and my credentials rather than them hiring me over someone else more qualified, because they're trying to bring "diversity". I wouldn't feel that I'm there fairly, that my looks and birthplace which I had no control of, plays a role in me getting what I have and makes me feel a little guilty. I know that being a woman helps me get things, and also my background has helped me get things, but it's not right necessarily, it just makes me feel extremely conscious of how I look. It's like when people say "hey little one" at work, I know they don't mean it negatively but it immediately brings my size to mind.

Also I don't feel that individuals should strive to have black friends, or white friends, asian friends, or friends of any race in particular. Individuals should make relations and friendships based on love, reliability and other good personality traits. People can smell when they're being befriended, favored or looked at differently because they're exoticised. It depends on the person to take advantage of their background or to be offended.

It's a complicated issue.

Looking through Harrell Fletcher's site I found one of his proposals The Good Life to be one of my favorites by him. He would transform a bus stop and a phone kiosk into a puppet theater with puppets attached for the public to create their own shows. The theme is based on two people he admires making the community piece also personal and something he desires to create on many different levels. Fletcher also wishes to use eco-friendly methods and incorporate a blueberry plant for the public to care for. I hope this project will be, or has been approved and funded.

Critique of Michael May's website

It's really fun, and it represents your sense of humor and personality. The ambition is clear in the website and would play into showing your work ethic and knowledge with web, looking good for you to whoever is looking to hire. It also pulls the viewer/user in to spend more time with it, so i don't think you have to worry about the person looking at it being too crammed for time to look at this site, encouraging the person looking to hire to procrastinate. Very fun and cool site, it reminds me of sodaplay a little bit.

Critique of Ian's website.

Ian's website is pretty cool and of course very different. It's something that most of us have never seen before; as in the role the camera plays in this site. The actual navigation is basic, in a good way where the user would be able to fluently travel through the site. The technology is pretty much introducing the viewers to a new mouse, or tool, which can be something the user brings to the table. I do have a couple of questions in whether people going to the site would know what to do, but with time, more and more of these kinds of sites will pop up and the knowledge of how would spread virally (I'm sure it was the same way with every new technology introduced). A very ambitious idea and it was executed very well. A+.

I want to generate true understanding about one another through demonstrating in detail that everyone is different because of our surroundings (of course biologically as well, but science isn’t my main focus). For example I would show why Bob calls soda “pop” or calls pop “soda” and why he drinks a specific brand of soda at eleven forty five in the morning every single day. Revealing certain aspects of individual’s surroundings and past upbringing will show why people eat the particular foods they eat, why people speak the way they do and dress the way they dress. My goal is to instill the idea of tolerance and relativity that applies to individuals and to groups of people, or any kind of perspective as a matter of fact. Of course I cannot say that I’m innocent of being judgmental because it is inherent in human beings to learn from the small experiences we have (“small” in relation to the whole, as in “everything”) and sometimes because we are told what to think (sometimes subliminally) from what people in our surroundings us tell us. Essentially, I want people to understand and learn to tolerate one another, and to decrease perpetual ethnocentricity.

I know that my project could potentially defend the argument for those who choose to blame “nurture” to defend criminals and touching this topic is not my goal. Being that I do not want to dive into personal topics such as religion and politics (because it would distract from my intentions) I am narrowing down my study to why people speak the way they do, eat specific foods, and dress the way they do. My selection does have to do more with the “nurture” side, as in cultural surroundings of an individual because I’m not going to ask why a certain person is male or female, which is on the scientific “nature” side. The main current perspectives I’m attacking ethnocentricity, harsh judgmental attitudes towards other individuals and cultures considered to be different.

This project is relevant to our current post-modern culture because I believe people today are more open and receptive than in past generations to the idea of cultural relativity, and to understanding human behavior. My project however will not put any emphasis on nation or nationalism, but focus on individuality to eliminate separate nations and highlight that we’re all just people. I wanted to emphasize that everyone is their own culture, each house hold is a different culture than the house hold next door. The timing is right time because many people still discriminate against certain people or groups, the idea of everyone being different has grown strong and I want to explain in detail why people are all different to help break the wall of prejudice.

I want my audience to experience a self-reflective moment, a moment of awareness that part of their personality comes from their location, and whom they’re raised with. I want to show that this applies to every other human being. I want the individuals in my audience to feel related to the individuals being portrayed in my documentaries, but also feel that they are unique, different than everyone else and at the same time that every other person is also different than everyone else. I’m striving to set a meditative tone and produce moments of self-reflection.

What is your primary Objective? What are we about to accomplish?

My goal is to demonstrate the idea and relevance of relativity, and environmental determinism, which forms who we are individually. This is to lead to true understanding in my audience of why people behave the way the do and my hope is that this understanding of one another would lead to tolerance.

Why is now the right time for your project?

In our current post-modern culture I believe that people are more open and receptive than in the past generations to the idea of cultural relativity, and understanding human behavior. My project however will not put any emphasis on “nation” or nationalism, but focus on individuality to eliminate “separate” nations and highlight that we’re all just people. It’s the right time because many people still discriminate against certain people or groups, the idea of everyone being different has grown strong and I want to explain in detail why people are all different to help break the wall of prejudice.

What do I want to say to my target audience?

All individuals are different from one another because of their social and environmental context. We are all determined by our surroundings, which wrap themselves around every moment of our lives leading to what we eat, what we wear, how we speak, and our personalities. My passion for cultural anthropology, my interest in the great thinkers of philosophy, and the technical skills I learned here at the kcai School of Design.

What are current perceptions of your topic?

Well that depends on different belief systems, and also goes into the political argument of “nurture or nature?” which is a very controversial topic when it comes to crime and sexual orientation currently in our society. I know that my project could potentially defend the argument for those who choose to blame “nurture” to defend criminals and touching this topic is not my goal. Being that I do not want to dive into personal and “hot” topics such as religion and politics (because it would distract from my real intentions) I am narrowing down my study to why people speak the way they do, eat specific foods, and dress the way they do. It's 2009 and slavery thrives as victims of rampant DMST (Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking) are ignored and discriminated against. Hundreds of American children are lured and forced into the industry by pimps who are rarely prosecuted while the victims are—as child "prostitutes". The general assumption is that these kids sell themselves by choice, showing that an uninformed community influences opinions of enforcement; who view them as juveniles. My project calls to expose the topic and to educate to bring about understanding that they are victims. My plan is to erase the word prostitute out of the mind, which holds a "dirty" connotation for these girls and replace it with victim for them to be recognized and get the attention and care that they need.

Description:

It's 2009 and slavery thrives as we ignore and discriminate against victims of sex trafficking crimes against young American children (DMST- Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking). Child "prostitutes" are not selling themselves by choice, they're there because of dire situations and pimps who lure, then forced them into the industry. The problem is growing as drug dealers realize it's easier to sell children because they are forgotten (most of these children are homeless or runaways), they are considered as more profitable because of re-usability, and because pimps and customers are rarely prosecuted. The ones who are prosecuted are the children! An uninformed community influences the opinions of law enforcement; who usually see these young children as juvenile prostitutes. An educated and engaged community would understand that they are victims of crimes that shouldn't be tolerated.

My project calls for attention to the issue (which is widespread in Kansas City), and calls to change a perspective that discriminates against the thousands of child sex workers who are under oppression by pimps, demand, the public, and lack of government intervention. My plan is to clear the word prostitute out of the mind, a "dirty" connotation for these girls and replace it with victim for them to be recognized and get the attention that they need.

Challenge:

Changing the mindset of a community (including law enforcement) to view these girls as victims of exploitation rather than as prostitutes because they do not choose to be in the situation they are in.

Getting law enforcement to change their perspective on how they view victims as well and getting the public to care.

Solution:

Unfiltered, raw information about the reality of the problem to the public who is generally unaware about the rampant slave trade here in the States. Giving attention to the issue in the places where it happens, where people see and pass by driving in their cars not knowing or caring about the crimes occurring in their surroundings. Education about mind control and the backgrounds of the victims to get them to understand the children's despair.

• Techno Noir

The author mentions in the beginning the movie Blade Runner having an influence on Macintosh's GUI, popularizing the idea of the future which is still prominent today. "techno-noir"; a strong theme here at the art school and also manifests itself in trendy modular design similar to a Pac-Man typeface aesthetic.

• An observation I made about the whole Chapter

This chapter expressed ideas and questions that all the past great thinkers (Aristotle, Epicurus, Hobbes, Spinoza etc.) have already coined only that she explains these ideas and questions in terms of communication technology (cinema, print, etc.) and the more recent Human Computer Interface.

She tries to convince us that HCI is original when in fact it is not, everything is rooted from mankind, as she said even the idea of the "desktop" referring a traditional old fashioned desktop.

She also kept stressing the idea that code "provides it's own model of the world" (pg 64) which I believe is an exaggeration. The entire world and history determines the model therefore the model being a reflection of one method of viewing the world.

• Impact on everyday life

I did come to realize in this chapter that with HCI, the culture of work and leisure are now integrated and makes room for more time the more multi-tasking is possible (with the internet!!) and demonstrates efficiency which is tied to compression and room or more bandwidth, more information and action. She says "our society is engaged in more activities during a typical day" and made me realize that all the paradoxes or maybe oxymoron’s created by the internet. I remember Hal Wert saying (something like this) "in the history of all mankind we have never been more connected with each other yet so isolated, alone in a room on the computer". And that made me ponder—all this socializing I do online, I'm doing it while working, online surfing, watching shows, chatting with friends, and listening to music, like the author mentions.

• New Media Art versus New Media Design

I learned the difference between New Media Art, versus New Media Design, where in New Media Art, the content and the interface are one. Just as the paint used in an abstract painting portraying itself- is one in the same. With New Media Design, the content; pre-existing and then the designer organizes that information in terms of HCI.

• The Author on HCI being a collaborator and Co- creator & Editor of our Culture.

The author expresses two opposite ideas, that the Human computer interface is something that people collaborate with rather than as a tool, but later in the reading she mentions that the interface is a tool rooting from the Egyptian papyrus scroll, being determined from all history (which is something commonly known if you believe in determinism, and evolution).

I personally viewed the interface as a tool, equal to a paintbrush. I do not collaborate with a paintbrush or give the paintbrush credit for my work (even though there are certain limits my paintbrushes do give me contributing to the look in some way- for example I cannot make a perfect hairline brush stroke with a one inch wide brush.) I don't see these tools as individual thinking beings that make conceptual decisions in my work. This is just my opinion because I know there are some people in places all over the world that see tools as thinking contributors.

She does mention something similar to the idea of limits in technology on pg 67 "these behaviors can only be obtained in the course of running the computer program, they cannot be predicted beforehand" >>> but isn't predicting and not allowing the fact that certain technologies don't exist or that we do not know about it to get in the way of conceptual development? (referring to our online community project).

While I have this^ as my personal opinion, her believing that this interface is the creator and filter of our culture annoyed me. Collective individuals create culture, which creates individuals that come together to be collective individuals and it goes in a circular equation. She's declaring a statement (in terms of technology) that the chicken came before the egg. (something along those lines)

She mentions in the section Cultural Interfaces that this interface is universal when in fact it is not. There are plenty places left in this world that haven't touched it yet but we do know that there are projects to fix that problem. I Believe it has the capability of being universal and access is the only thing preventing people from using it where there isn't (maybe some religious aspects too) but the main reason I believe that people are interested in the internet (mostly web 2.0) is because it is democratic. Everyone has a voice (except for Chinese citizens who have a very limited government controlled internet) and if the computer didn't have connection ability, if it were just for work and games, it would not be as popular as it is today. The main reason why I myself began to spend more time on the computer wasn't to organize my files or play solitaire, but I spent more time with computers/internet for exposure to the rest of the world.

The author States in the reading contrasting to some of her previous descriptions of the interface in saying that "given that computer media is simply a set of characters and numbers stored in a computer (obvious mechanical materialism), there are numerous ways in which it could be presented to a user"

This statement (which also represents a mechanical materialist's point of view) could be said in shorter words -

I like the way she organizes the three main channels/ interfaces. This categorization were not new to me however she organized it so that it is easier to remember. She also assumes that the reader didn't see the printed word, or cinema as interfaces...so to me her several paragraph explanation for this was redundant.

• Reading today

I did think it was ironic, that she explains that the page is now organized and designed to be viewed in a certain order, she says "the user was given the ability to go back and forth, scroll etc...virtual page...the user is invited to skip away from blocks of text to any direction" and I know that I do not like reading books when sparknotes or wikipedia organizes summaries and are available online. teachers have accused our generation as the one that doesn't really read. I agree (people still read, but much less than before) which is why I think it is ironic that this wordy reading about interfaces isn't interactive material on the web to make taking in this information more interesting and more efficient.

Later in this reading she contradicts the statement that all HCI is is numbers and characters, she goes on to sat that RAM's core methodology is unfair because; all content is equal and are accessed all with equal speed. Why is she surprised that RAM sees all numbers and characters as equal concepts?

• Solipsism and Otherness

The author begins to discuss onscreen space, stating "Even though the onscreen space is the only visible part, this larger scenographic part is nonetheless considered to exist around it"

This statement is solipsism (awareness that everything you know is incomplete, being that we only experience little bits and pieces of a whole world), a very old discovery rooting back to aristotle when he asked "How do we know that anything exists outside of our peripheral view?" Which led to him declaring and believing objects surely exist independent of the mind. She thinks that this "frame" only applies to the three interfaces when it applies to human biology as well. We live within a round frame with blurry edges.

What she talks about after this really interested me. She goes on to talk about Virtual Reality and this interactive frame in computer interface that makes the vision aligned with your own. This reflects human fascination, or this recent century's fascination with "the other". It reminded me of the movie BEING JOHN MALKOVICH. But of course that's impossible. For example, only a bat would know what its like to be a bat no matter how much information we attain about the bat. Virtual reality is a reflection of the interest to be or exist something outside of self. It could also reflect other interest such as omnipotence and power of intervening in other worlds, hence some computer game geeks. But my personal interest with computer games is the idea of existing outside of me, just out of curiosity.

Degree Project Idea

The field I am interested in pursuing is children’s education, and solving issues with communication in the teaching process. Many children at an early age learn numbers through memorization rather than through concept. It is understandable that teaching philosophical concepts to children is deemed as impossible, but it is essential to their future education in mathematics, the foundation must be solid. Most children at an early age do not understand that numbers are simply the name for an amount, they are simply taught to quickly memorize numbers in counting, as if it were a song. From my own experience, as a child, I was handed a book of multiplication tables to memorize quickly and was then told I had a quiz in the next few days, which put me and several other children behind in school because it wasn’t an effective way of learning math. I didn’t learn the concept of a number until I was…until three weeks ago. I know that If I learned the concept from a young age, my grades in math through grade school would’ve been a bit better (I think).

Not learning the concept of a number from an early age, one will grow to believe that numbers are solely sequential rather than logical, negatively affecting their future grades in future math classes. I want to figure out a program for young students to understand the essence of what numbers actually are (simply names for amounts) on a visual level, to provide a tool for math teachers. The age demographic would be kindergarten to 2^nd grade. I have spoken with two teachers; one elementary school teacher, the other, a middle school teacher and both agree that the problem I have pinpointed is definitely there. The tools that would be used to fix this problem would range from print to motion and/or interactive media similar to Rosetta Stone. It could possibly include fun teaching animations like Donald Duck in Mathe-magics Land, something I remember from middle school that I found was effective and interesting, the only interesting thing I ever learned in a math class throughout grade school. I want to make math learning clear, accurate, and fun for children to ensure their success in the field in the future.

The project would require me to visit elementary schools and possibly the school board to look at their curriculum and agenda that teachers have very little control over, and look through this problem I hope to solve within the mathematics curriculum. It would also require me to interact and teach the idea to young children themselves.

DMST is a Rampant Problem, why isn't anyone talking about it?

Why isn't anyone doing anything about it?

Why are the Pimps and Customers getting away with the crimes?

Why are the Victims being punished for being victims?

The misconception that child sex slaves are "prostitutes" rather than victims.

This attitude that is neutral or against the victims prevents the victims from being rescued, or finding a way out. The public's generalizations about sex trafficking block these victims from hope and security, in our society, it is the victim who is usually arrested rather than the Pimp and/ or customer.

Maybe if everyone began to side with victims, more would reveal themselves at an earlier stage, without any fear of being shunned by the community.

Maybe law enforcement would take more time into investigating the customers and pimps rather than to repeatedly arrest and release these children.

This stage of my project could possibly be the foundation of governmental change, safe center facility increase and getting the public to have no fear in reporting suspicious behavior.

I called at 8:35 am today, got an answering machine and left a message with my number.

I received a call at 8:56 am today as the return call

I told her about myself, what i was trying to do and if I could ask her a few questions about the subject and she agreed to do it over the phone.

Q: "How old do most women or girls end up in a situation where they are being trafficked?"

A: "nation wide? twelve years old."

Q: "what do you think is an underlying issue that feeds into this industry?"

A: "Sexual abuse in the homes, most people when they think of 'sex trafficking' they think that the girls and women were kidnapped when that usually isn't the case. It starts from the home, usually someone from the outside entering the home, touching the young girls in the wrong way and then giving them rewards like candy, or anything if they 'keep it a secret' and so the girls begin to associate those 'feelings' with rewards."

Q: "where do these girls live when they begin child prostitution or being sexually exploited as DMST victims?"

A: "they are usually runaways, homeless or throwaways— throwaways are kids from homes where the parents are addicted to drugs and the parents don't care, and when girls get into the sex industry it's because they feel they have no where else to go. They sometimes also do it as an easy way to feed a drug addiction."

Q: "do you think that law enforcement help the problem...or try to stop the problem or contribute to it?"

A: "well ... the problems going on in the young woman's life with the police starts when she turns 18, she's still got the same problems, but as soon as she turns 18 her treatment from law enforcement changes"

Q: "Are the women that are victims or prostitutes also involved in other industries having to do with adult content?"

A: "...I don't understand what you mean."

Q: " as in do many of the prostitutes or the young women work in strip clubs or things like that?"

A: "no, actually for many, before prostitution they start in high class strip clubs. However they begin to try to find outlets from depression due to constantly being touched or surrounded by men they do not like, they turn to drugs and alcohol, then their standards fall, they end up in a lower strip club and eventually...they end up in prostitution."

Q: "so what do you feel is needed to help end this issue or industry?"

A: "awareness of the demand, if there weren't men looking to buy sex, then these girls wouldn't be out there, also the pimps and men who buy sex from these women always get away. Recently a girl who was 12 years old was arrested, the men all thought she was 17, she looked convincing, and when a girl's in this situation she's looking at about 182 days in jail, the pimp and all the men who bought her went free."

The Web 2.0 Community

1. Membership
For the Web Community this would involve authorship on the site. Members are able to add to the content in addition to being a reader and follower. Being apart of the online community would be less personal than a physical community, but it allows for a wide range of members because the community becomes globally accessible.

2. Influence
A community and individual’s influence within the community in a Web 2.0 environment would involve the quantity and effectiveness of the member’s participation in authorship, commentary and sharing. The community platform would allow access for all members to be published and heard equally by everyone and each other encouraging an equal exchange of power.

3. Integration and Fulfillment of Needs
Involvement in a Web 2.0 community allows participants with common interests to find what they desire and contribute information that enables others to obtain what they need.

The Three Problems that I found in Kansas City

1. American Sex Trafficking; Misidentification of Victims.
2. Gang Violence and Affiliation Pressures in Schools.
3. Lack of Sexual Education and Access to that Information in Schools.

The one that I found most shocking to learn was the scale of DMST (Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking) in the KCMO/Independence area. I'm not talking just about children smuggled from overseas, but children of American Citizens being snatched walking to home from school, or young girls being seduced by a good looking older man, or being trafficked by a family member!!!

At least 100,000 American Children are being exploited sexually, and it brings in at least 9.5 billion dollars a year.

The main thing that repulsed me was the fact that many of these victims are misidentified with being child prostitutes and are arrested and punished, even though they are legally qualified to be victims and inform the police, they are imprisoned.
They get punished while their buyers and "pimps" do not get punished.

How can I tell these children that all they have to do is tell law enforcement when the law is against them and on their captor's side?
This isn't always the case, sometimes the "pimp" will get 6 months in prison. Only 6 months, some cases 8 years.
Also not all of the victims have been arrested or charged, but they are rarely assisted.

Many children that are trafficked are mistaken to be from an abusive home, which sometimes is the case but parents have been investigated when they don't know what's going on.

Young girls are sometimes seduced over a period of time then once the older man gains her trust, he exploits her.

There has been some movements against this terror in our community, but Kansas City Missouri is still considered a hot spot in the nation for DMST. Shared Hope is an organization with 10 stations in the U.S. (and some overseas) and one of their stations is in Independence MO. However their facility isn't enough to restore the victims.

Over 1 in 100 "erotic" posts posted in Craigslist are affiliated with DMST victims.

A lot of the problem is supported by lack of information to officers and the public.

People are usually afraid of admitting they are a victim because of judgement and being in a "purity myth" society.
The Purity Myth by Jessica Valenti reveals that young girls are especially oppressed and pressured into thinking that their most valuable feature is their "hymen" or "virginity", a term that cannot be proved scientifically. "innocent" is now the new "sexy" according to conservative and christian teachings but really what they mean by "innocent" they describe it as little girls. Young girls are being taught that a submissive attitude and being eager to please every man's need is ideally what every man wants.
Essentially pop culture idolizes young girls as a sexual commodity, and this can be seen in magazines and TV on a regular basis. It seems like a far stretch but i believe that this "small" issue contributes to the lack of self esteem, the stress and vunerability of young girls. I believe that awareness of the misogyny in "christian" teachings including proper sexual education to a younger age will also help prevent young girls from falling into the hands of predators.

Also awareness among law enforcement is needed.
Law enforcement many times do not know how to identify DMST victims resulting in unjust prosecution against the victims.

Ziba’s competitors include brands such as Mona Vie, the drink with the highest levels of anti-oxidants¬ drink in the world. Xango, a mangosteen fruit drink from Southeast Asia, also high in anti-oxidants (which contributes to preventing cancer). Naked Juice, which is an organic popular drink served in Whole Foods, Starbucks and other environmentally responsible vendors. Odwalla, very similar to Naked Juice, Orangina, a healthier orange sparkling drink, POM pomegranate juice and Bolthouse Farms which is an organic drink that competes with Naked Juice.

My inspiration comes from the Persian region, which includes Iran, Northern Iraq, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Southern Georgia, and Western China. I’ve looked back at the artifacts of ancient Persia and found rich content and symbolism for strength and power. Many of their symbols are derived from zodiac signs, astrology, and myths. The Lion in Persian empires symbolized their kingship. The Homa bird is from Eastern Fables and also is connected to Jainism and Buddhism. The Bull is a symbol for abundance and power and is seen on the supporting columns which came from Susa and Persepolis; historical Persian city palaces.

Ziba’s customers are interested in personal health and nutrition. They believe in a balanced lifestyle and are physically active hard workers. They are aware and active in protecting the environment and try their best to decrease the effect of their footprints on the environment. They believe highly in progression in technology if it also considers it’s effects on pollution.
